VW Parts for the "People Car"
Volkswagen literally means "people car". True to its name, Volkswagen produced the best-selling car of all time, the Beetle. Volkswagen's history goes back to Ferdinand Porsche's vision of producing a vehicle that every working man can afford. This idea was not a new one but previous attempts to realize it had failed.
Ferdinand Porsche had an impeccable reputation as an automobile engineer, heading his own consultation firm and previously serving as chief designer of Lohner, Austro-Daimler, Mercedes, Daimler-Benz and Steyr. When Hitler expressed his desire to produce a car that would serve the needs of the average German, Porsche seized the opportunity and presented his plans to Hitler who greenlighted the project, but with several requirements: the car should be a five-seater, have a cruising speed of 100 kmh, get 40 miles to the gallon, be air-cooled, and be priced below 1000 Marks. Ferdinand Porsche accepted the challenge even though he was sure that a car could not be made that cheaply: the cost of Ford's mass produced models at the time was roughly the equivalent of 2,600 Marks. Fortunately, Porsche had already designed many of the required VW parts in one of his earlier models with a similar name - the Volksauto. Porsche assigned the name Type 60 to his prototype but it was changed to V1 and a convertible version Hitler requested was named V2. By 1935, 3 prototypes were created and Daimler-Benz were ordered to build another 30 to complete the testing. The car now sported the unique streamlined look that would become famous around the world.
The Beetle or VW Type 1 was ready for production in 1939 but World War 2 intervened and the car was retooled for the far effort. Porsche revised some of the VW parts, enlarging the engine and crafting a four-seater body for the wartime model Type 81. The VW Schwimmwagen was an amphibious vehicle used extensively by the German army. After the war, Volkswagen's first customer would ironically be the British who needed light transport and ordered 20,000 units. Volkswagen sold only 2 cars when it started exporting to America but clever advertising campaigns popularized the brand immensely. In 1973, sale of the Volkswagen Beetle exceeded the 16 millionth marks replacing the Model T as the best-selling car in the world. It was also named fourth most influential car of the 20th century by the Global Automotive Elections Foundation. Later versions of the Type 1 sold poorly and Volkswagen purchased Audi/Auto Union to help the company create a new breed of VW vehicles. Polo, Golf, and Passat succeeded the VW Beetle and represented a break from the company's one-brand policy.
To keep the company competitive, Group CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder and brand CEO Wolfgang Bernhard unleashed a brand offensive that started in 2002, introducing new models in its lineup like the sixth-generation Passat and the fifth-generation Jetta. Martin Winterkorn will become VW Group CEO on January 1, 2007. He was responsible for bringing the Audi brand to the spotlight and making it a credible competitor to other luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes.

PIN Reports Compact Vehicles Continuously Gain Share in the US Market
According to real-time retail transaction data from the Power Information Network (PIN) a division of J.D. Power and Associates, compact vehicles are still gaining a greater share of the US new vehicle market as more models of compact cars are made available for consumers.
The compact share of the total new vehicle market rose from 27.9% in 2005 to 31.2% in 2006. During that time, the share of the midsize vehicles dropped from 42.8% to 40.4% while the share of the large vehicles plummets from 29.3% to 28.5%. It should be noted that six years ago specifically in the year 2000, compact vehicles accounted for just 23.8% of the market.
According to Tom Libby, Senior Director of Industry Analysis at PIN, "Growth in the compact vehicle segments is being driven, in part, by an increase in the number of models and the popularity of small crossover vehicles."
Aside from the increase in the number of available compact models, price, styling and functionality are additional factors that contribute to the compact vehicle share growth. Libby also stressed that the prices of gas in 2006 may have caused some consumers to shy away from purchasing larger cars and trucks. Not to mention the high maintenance and repair cost of auto body parts of larger cars and trucks.
Libby further stated, "It will be interesting to see if prices stabilize at or below $2.00 a gallon, whether we see a return to larger vehicles…I don’t think we will.”
Due to the popularity of compact vehicles they are moving off dealer lots more quickly than they used to and are sold quicker than the typical new vehicle. Last December 2006, five out of the seven segments with the fastest turn rates were compact vehicle segments, with the compact premium CUV (28 days) ranking 1st and the compact basic car (35 days) segments ranking second.
Segment loyalty of compact vehicle owners specifically in the non-luxury sector is also increasing. Likewise, percentage of owners of both midsize and large non-luxury vehicles trading to a compact vehicle increased as well from 20.8% to 25.8%. There is also an increase from 7% to 9.1% among large non-luxury vehicle drivers.
And for this year, 2007, seven compact models have made their debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The seven compact models that were introduced focused on new smaller crossovers and more conventional small cars---and that’s according to Jeff Schuster, Executive Director of J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Forecasting.
Among the vehicles introduced during the 2007 NAIAS includes Ford Focus, Nissan Rogue, Volvo XC60 and some small crossover entries from Infiniti, Lexus, Cadillac and Audi. Volume in this segment is also expected to quadruple from 40,000 units in 2006 to 160,000 units by 2008, according to Schuster.

During that time, the share of the midsize vehicles dropped from 42.8% to 40.4% while the share of the large vehicles plummets from 29.3% to 28.5%. It should be noted that six years ago specifically in the year 2000, compact vehicles accounted for just 23.8% of the market.
According to Tom Libby, Senior Director of Industry Analysis at PIN, "Growth in the compact vehicle segments is being driven, in part, by an increase in the number of models and the popularity of small crossover vehicles."
Aside from the increase in the number of available compact models, price, styling and functionality are additional factors that contribute to the compact vehicle share growth. Libby also stressed that the prices of gas in 2006 may have caused some consumers to shy away from purchasing larger cars and trucks. Not to mention the high maintenance and repair cost of auto body parts of larger cars and trucks.
Libby further stated, "It will be interesting to see if prices stabilize at or below $2.00 a gallon, whether we see a return to larger vehicles…I don’t think we will.”
Due to the popularity of compact vehicles they are moving off dealer lots more quickly than they used to and are sold quicker than the typical new vehicle. Last December 2006, five out of the seven segments with the fastest turn rates were compact vehicle segments, with the compact premium CUV (28 days) ranking 1st and the compact basic car (35 days) segments ranking second.
Segment loyalty of compact vehicle owners specifically in the non-luxury sector is also increasing. Likewise, percentage of owners of both midsize and large non-luxury vehicles trading to a compact vehicle increased as well from 20.8% to 25.8%. There is also an increase from 7% to 9.1% among large non-luxury vehicle drivers.
And for this year, 2007, seven compact models have made their debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The seven compact models that were introduced focused on new smaller crossovers and more conventional small cars---and that’s according to Jeff Schuster, Executive Director of J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Forecasting.
Among the vehicles introduced during the 2007 NAIAS includes Ford Focus, Nissan Rogue, Volvo XC60 and some small crossover entries from Infiniti, Lexus, Cadillac and Audi. Volume in this segment is also expected to quadruple from 40,000 units in 2006 to 160,000 units by 2008, according to Schuster.

Most of us rely on our cars to get us from A to B, but the fuel to mark these cars run are constantly changing and even if the petrol/gasoline goes up by just a few pence or cents a litre it makes all the difference as families live on a very small budget and the slightest change to this budget makes it so hard for a family to survive, but that does not matter to our governments as they still do not mind taxing the fuel high, especially in Britain
There has not been much of an alternative and we have all had to endure the huge price increases, but for the past for years there has been a small light at the end of the tunnel in the form of Hybrid Cars which use both Petrol/Gasoline Engines and they work in conjunction with an electric motor, so when you are at a stop or you pull of slowly the electric motor is doing all the work then once you are at a certain speed then the petrol/gasoline engine kicks in, but many people have already wrote about this which is nothing new
But what many of do not know is what are the best hybrid vehicles on the market as more and more car manufactures jump on the band wagon, when I say to you what are the best hybrids at the moment I mean in terms of what gives you the best fuel efficiency so how many MPG Well the car that is taking up the number one spot has always been the Toyota Prius and has helped Toyota get so big in America, all you have to do is look at the figures to see why the Pirus is the number one, 60 MPG in the City and 51 MPG on the motorway/highway Number two has to go to the Honda Civic where you are able to achieve around 49 MPG in the city and 51 MPG on the motorway/highway
And third is also taken up by a Toyota but this time the Camry Hybrid which will give you 40MPG in the city and 8 MPG on the run
The only problem that the Hybrid car has at the moment is the performance, do not expect it to be super quick, but I am sure as time goes on the technology inside will just keep getting better and better, but on the plus side second hand values of the hybrid car do not fall as much as a petrol/ gasoline version of the same model which is another way to save money as well.
