New York Times to Test Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle

Car manufacturers have been outdoing each other in developing and producing cutting edge green vehicles. The race to produce the most fuel efficient vehicle is spurred by the increased demand for fuel misers as prices of gasoline increases.

Furthermore, President Bush’s “Twenty in Ten” policy has prompted car manufacturers to produce fuel efficient vehicles. Hybrid technology is already being widely used by car manufacturers. Hybrid vehicles use an electric motor to give extra power to the vehicle without using petroleum fuel.

Taking a step further, car manufacturers are now developing plug-in hybrid vehicles, or hybrid vehicles which are equipped with a battery pack. Now such a type of vehicle can be actually recharged via a common household outlet for additional power.

Recently, a vehicle of that kind was delivered to the New York Times. The world famous newspaper recently announced that they have become the first recipient of a plug-in hybrid vehicle in the East Coast. The said plug-in hybrid vehicle will be tested by the New York Times as a part of a commercial performance demonstration and technology evaluation process.

The vehicle, a Dodge Sprinter, will be tasked to deliver New York Times newspapers from the firm’s printing plant in College Point, Queens to the New York Times’ headquarters located in central Manhattan. Aside from that duty, the Dodge Sprinter plug-in hybrid vehicle will also be making trips to the Time’s plant situated in Edison, New Jersey.

The New York Times received the said PHEV as the result of the collaboration between DaimlerChrysler, the New York Power Authority, the Electric Power Research Institute, and Con Edison. The partnership is aimed to test the developed plug-in hybrid vehicle under real-world applications. DaimlerChrysler is the only carmaker to test their plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States. The result of the evaluation process will play a major role in the future of the Dodge Sprinter plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Tom Lombardo, the Vice President for Production of the New York Times, has this to say: “We are proud that The New York Times is the first major entity in the State of New York with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in our fleet. When we were approached by NYPA and DaimlerChrysler, we knew immediately that we wanted to be involved. We are delighted to be supporting the use of clean energy, sustainability and advances in plug-in hybrid technology.”

Meanwhile, Mark Chernoby, the Vice President for Advanced Vehicle Engineering of the Chrysler Group, has this to say about the partnership with the New York Times: “Alliances such as this are necessary for new technologies to move forward. The daily operation of The New York Times Dodge Sprinter plug-in hybrid will give DaimlerChrysler the valuable real world experience needed for hybrid powertrain and lithium-ion battery development.”

You Might Already Have a Car Air Purifier

You might be shocked to discover that the air inside of your car could be three times more harmful than the air outside. The need for a good car air purifier is becoming much more important than you think. This article will expose you to the needs and benefits of installing a car air purifier in your automobiles.

The nice thing about car air purifiers is that they are usually fairly compact and simple to install. They are often powered by simply plugging in an adapter into your cigarette lighter. The only maintenance that is needed is to change the filter on a regular basis.

The car air purifier is designed to remove pollutants such as pollen, dust, smoke, allergens, and more. Cars can also develop molds and other harmful odors that are caused from leaks and water build up. This is very similar to a home that has a leaky basement or mold on window seals.

You can often find car air purifier units that come with an assortment of nice smelling fragrances that will not only clean the air and make it healthier, but they will help to add a fresh smell to your car or truck.

You can also use your car air purifier in your home if you like. They are not designed to purify a large area, but if you have small space in your home or maybe at work you could get more use out of your unit.

If you are looking to purchase a new car or truck you might ask if the vehicle has any type of car air purifier filter system installed that is designed to purify the air. Make sure that you know what type of filter the system uses and also ask how much it cost so that you are not surprised when it comes time to replace it.

Renting a Sports Car

When one thinks of rental cars, they usually imagine overused sedans in neutral colors that lack pep or performance. Rental cars have often been generic, neutral vehicles maintained due to their functionality and reliability. The ho-hum prospect of renting a car in the past rarely elicited any feeling of excitement.

The car rental process, however, has changed over time. Now, a prospective renter can choose from a wider spectrum of vehicles, including popular high-performance sports cars.

A sports car might appeal to a renter for any number of reasons. A single person traveling alone may crave something novel and fun while on a dull business trip or as a means of rounding out a vacation trip. Others may wish to try their hand at driving a sports car on a temporary basis just for the sake of variety. Still others can use the opportunity to rent a sports car as a financially viable means of creating an extended test drive prior to making a sports car purchase. There are true sports car enthusiasts who need a rental car for any number of reasons and can simply not imagine a return to the doldrums of driving a conventional car.

This great variety of reasons has created sufficient demand for rental agencies to add sports cars to their available fleet of autos. Now, in addition to station wagons, economy class cars and base sedans, more and more rental companies are providing prospective customers with a healthy array of sports car options.

Of course, one cannot expect to rent a high-end import sports are at rates similar to those they might pay for a domestic standard issue vehicle. Sports cars, of course, are more expensive to purchase, maintain and insure. Thus, one can expect to pay significantly higher rates when renting one.

In addition to higher base rental rates, prospective customers can also anticipate some additional expenses. For instance, sports cars generally do not boast the fuel efficiency found in the more frequently rented subcompact cars and gas bills for the period of the rental are likely to run high.

Additionally, the rental agency may require additional insurance purchase, or at the very least, more expensive insurance options, than are generally required of other rented vehicles. Remember, the agency must purchase (or lease) these cars at considerably higher prices than standard models and that expense will be reflected throughout your rental experience.

Younger drivers may also encounter some difficulties in renting high-end sports cars. Rental agencies have always been somewhat restrictive when it comes to the age of drivers, but there are likely to have even stiffer requirements for the rental of sports cars. Rental agencies want to insure the safety of their sports car investments.

Sports car rentals create a unique opportunity for renters. It allows someone who may otherwise never have the opportunity to take the wheel of a high-performance vehicle to see what all the fuss is about. It can give one a chance at glamour and excitement for a few days without any real commitment or long-term burden. Although the cost of renting a sports car may be high enough to freeze some renters out of the market, their availability does increase their accessibility to those who may never have another opportunity to enjoy the sports car experience.

The next time you are renting a car, you may want to consider trying an exotic sports car for a few days. It can add something unique to your vacation or business trip. You can experience the excitement of sports car driving without the burdens of sports car ownership. If one can afford the additional expense of a great rental car upgrade, the rental sports car experience may be a great alternative to chugging about in a dull generic car.

Toyota Fears Dent Reputation

The Toyota Motor Corp., the second largest automaker around the globe, is now in hot water along with other auto giants. The situation has been triggered by the increasing number of recalls and customer service campaigns.

Seiichi Sudo, the president of Toyota’s North American engineering and manufacturing unit, said "the increasing recall trend" is the key risk about the latest challenges encountered by the automaker. During the presentation, Sudo showed a chart about recalls and less-formal customer service campaigns or CSCs. The chart revealed a dramatic increase in recalls and CSCs in 2005 and 2006. Said occurrences are pointing to “design issues” and “high project workload” as the culprits.

Another chart showed that warranty claims have decreased. This is a positive indication that quality is being maintained. However, one commentary stated, “chronic issues still exist.” A particular “planning document” that covers Toyota’s challenges in the next five years is now held by the Free Press. According to the automaker’s spokesman, "It is unfortunate that a confidential and proprietary Toyota document was released outside the company."

Lately, Toyota has been receiving affirmative predictions from analysts in the industry. These analysts have even predicted that the automaker will dethrone GM as the world’s largest automaker. And the said prediction is expected to transform into reality any time this year. The prediction was anchored on the increasing global production and demands. In 2006, Toyota produced 9 million vehicles which is an increase by 9.5 percent from the previous year’s production. In the same year, GM produced 9.18 million vehicles. This year, Toyota is working on the margin.

Despite the concerns that the automaker is facing, Toyota has fewer 2006 recalls in the United States than GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda or Volkswagen. As reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota recalls dropped by about two-thirds to 814,507 vehicles in 2006.

Before the launch production of the new Toyota Tundra, Gary Convis, senior vice president of manufacturing in North America for Toyota, said maintaining quality is critical to Toyota's success. "The quality has got to be perfect. Every truck has got to be perfect." The aim to perfect quality is common among automakers. Ford engines, Volvo power steering pump and GM radiators as well as other auto parts are all aimed at quality.

However, Toyota had a series of high-profile quality issues in the previous year. As a fact, it has conducted a worldwide recall in May covering approximately 1 million vehicles that include two-thirds of the Prius hybrids sold in the United States. In January, Toyota recalled 533,000 Tundra pickups and Sequoia SUVs manufactured at Indiana factory due to a flaw that causes difficulty in steering.

Toyota has settled a class action, which has started in the late 1990s, for potential sludge damage in some of its vehicles including the Camry. Analysts and critics alike are studying closely the moves of the automaker including its manner of solving problems. Toyota Way plan formulated by the automaker ensures that each year is stretched further to expand and improve.

According to Neal Oddes, the director of product research and analysis for J.D. Power and Associates, “Redesigns and new vehicle launches often lead to a higher number of quality issues, but expansion has not affected Toyota's overall quality so far.” The Lexus brand ranked second and the Toyota brand fourth in the previous year’s J.D. Power Initial Quality Study for fewest problems per vehicle after three months on the road. Porsche and Hyundai were first and third, respectively.

Oddes added, “The competition has closed the gap, but Toyota has continued to improve to keep its position at or near the top of the rankings. We haven't seen any dip in quality. They continue to perform the same, if not better, than what they've previously done. Toyota stays at the top because it has an obsession with quality. Their whole culture is built around reliability.”

Effectiveness of Car Seat Clinics Confirmed

Workshops conducted to instruct parents on how to secure their children safely on their car seats are deemed quite effective as per a study done by Safe Kids Worldwide. The research takes into account the performance of parents who have undergone child passenger safety clinics held in 29 different states back in 2005.

The review showed that 45 percent of parents have improved their skills in securing their children safely on their booster seats at a second child safety seat clinic. The parents have improved their child safety seat skills after having undergone hands-on instructions on the first safety clinic conducted. While a significant number of parents have benefited from such clinics, Safe Kids Worldwide also cited that there is still room for improvements.

One of the aspects that Safe Kids pointed out that needs improvement is the number of people being reached by such endeavors. The clinics conducted only reached highly educated parents while the less educated sectors did not benefit from the said safety clinics. “We need to do more to reach the communities that need our help most,” Lorrie Walker said. Walker is the training and technical manager for Safe Kids Worldwide. “Safe Kids’ network of more than 600 coalitions and chapters in the United States has the flexibility and skills to meet the needs of each community we serve,” Walker added.

In response to the said problem, Safe Kids and its supporters are working to create more inspection stations in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Their leading financial supporter is General Motors Corporation. “Safe Kids has tools to help educate families of all backgrounds. We need to keep working to reach high-risk groups of parents with communication and training to keep their children properly restrained every time on every trip,” Bob Lange said, GM’s executive director of Structure and Safety Integration. Currently, the organization employs 119 Mobile Car Seat Check Up Vans to reach those communities which have no access to the group’s permanent inspection stations. Nationally certified child passenger safety technicians are also part of the campaign so as to further give the right kind of information to parents and guardians.

Safe Kids also shared that such clinics also need to reach families with older children. Their research shows that on their previously conducted clinics, the most number of participants are children below four years old. This presents a problem since their organization recommends that children should be provided with a booster seat until they are about four feet and 9 inches in height and weighs 80 to 100 pounds. Most kids reach this height and weight by the time they are around 8 to 12 years of age. “In the event of a crash, a belt-positioning booster seat and safety belt provide better protection for most tweens than the adult safety belt alone. Children in this age group are among the least likely to be in the correct restraint. We need to make booster seat use among tweens who need them just as automatic as it is for small children to ride in car seat,” Walker said.

The continued dedication of Safe Kids in educating parents on how to secure their children safely is in consonance with a study that shows how correctly used child safety seats increase the safety of children. Risk of death of children as a result of crash is decreased by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers when the child is properly secured. Using belt-positioning booster seats also cuts the risk of injury to a child by as much as 59 percent. In cases where an EBC rotor and calipers is not enough to avoid crashes, proper installation of child safety seats plays a vital role in the protection of your most precious cargo.

Luxury Car For Sale-It May Be Your Best Opportunity

Many people yearn for a luxury car. Unfortunately, they can’t afford it. Considering that they usually start at $36,000 salary, it may mean a year’s salary for a recent college graduate. Does that mean that you have limit yourself to a compact car made in Korea? Not necessarily. There is another way to get yourself the luxury car that you were looking for. And that is used luxury cars.

Where Should I Start Looking For A Luxury Car For Sale?

A good place to look for a luxury car for sale is at car rental agencies. These companies usually renew their fleet of vehicles once every two or three years. That means that you can obtain a real bargain on a used luxury car. Although the mileage can be a little too high for your liking, remember that the car has gone through the most detailed maintenance that a car can have. Not many luxury car owners can boast that.

Another option is specialty stores that dedicate themselves to selling secondhand luxury cars. They may be more expensive than the market average, but you may find a good choice. There are luxury cars that weren’t overly used by their owners and have been well maintained.

Within specialty stores you have two options: physical stores and Internet stores. The nice thing about the internet is that you can look at hundreds of available options. But remember that you still have to go and take a look at the car. There are things that even the best photo can’t reveal.

What Should I Consider When Looking For A Luxury Car For Sale?

The first thing to look for in a luxury car for sale is the historic record of the car. Was it taken regularly to the dealer for its periodic maintenance? That is a very important factor since the life of the motor depends on it. And, considering the amount of electronics that manufacturers put on their cars today, you should assure yourself that everything is fine.

The car mileage is also important. A car, on average, does acquire between 15,000 to 20,000 miles per year. Either too low or too high isn’t good. A too low figure can mean two things. That the car was tampered with or that it wasn’t correctly used. Remember that a car, even a luxury car, is a machine that needs to be used - that’s what it was designed for.

How Do You Find Such A Luxury Car Auction?

There is no better tool for searching information than the Internet. If you want to find a doctor or a job, or a luxury car auction all you need to key in the words in the search bar of any search engine, and BINGO – you will get an answer in a matter of seconds. Once you find a location close to your city or residence, all you need is to go and participate. These auctions are always open to everyone who wishes to participate. You only need to be familiar with the rules and formalities involved in an auction, but this you can find out and master only a few minutes.

Why Soft Tail Frames Create a Comfortable Motorcycle Ride

Soft tail frames for motorcycles are also known as "swing arm frames" for the swing arm which provides the soft ride. Motorcycles with soft frames ride quite different than those with rigid frames. The kidney-jolting road bumps feel much smoother and most riders find these bikes more comfortable for long trips.

How, exactly, does the soft tail frame and swing arm assembly work to provide the softer ride? The rear tire of the cycle must be connected to the frame. The difference between the two frame types is the way in which this connection is made.

A soft tail frame swing arm contains a pivot joint between the rest of the frame and the rear wheel assembly which supports the wheel and the rear suspension. Also, in a soft tail, there is rear suspension, including shock absorbers which remove some of the bumps that can be so hard on the rider's back.

The soft tail swing arm attaches to the frame behind the center of gravity on the motorcycle and the pivot joint is almost always higher than the hub of the rear wheel. This provides stability and prevents 'squat' when accelerating.

Stock motorcycles are soft tails. Custom built bikes can have either type of frame and many of the highly customized cycles have hard time frames rather. For riders that really prefer the comfort of the soft tail ride, there is no reason not to fully customize a swing arm frame. Even choppers, raked and lowered with long, extended fork assemblies can be built around a swing arm frame.

So, you might ask why some people strongly prefer a soft tail frame over a rigid frame. It's really simple; it is difficult to enjoy long road trips where most of the day is spent on the pavement which is frequently less than smooth.

As more and more motorcycle enthusiasts, many of which are baby boomers, get a bit older, comfort can be a major factor. No longer are motorcycles something that only the young ride for transportation. It's not uncommon to see groups of motorcycles ridden by retirees heading to Bike Week, Biketober Fest, or another major motorcycle gathering. America is aging and therefore more riders are older and seek the comfort factor.

One major difference between soft tail frames and the hard tail frame is the way the road feels to the rider. Hardcore bikers tend to love the way the hard tail allows the feel of the road to be felt through the frame, making the rider feel almost as if they are part of the road.

Is a soft tail frame the right choice for you? That is a question only you can answer. It all boils down to your riding stamina, how much you love that sense of feeling the road through the wheels, up into the frame and into your body, and sometimes just by what motorcycle you are accustomed to riding.
